Helen A. Barfield JEFFERSONVILLE – Helen A. Barfield, 86, of Hwy 80 passed away Wednesday. Graveside services will be held Monday May 23, 2022 at 3:00PM in Macon Memorial park Cemetery. Rev. Franklin Etheridge will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 before service. Helen was born on June 2, 1935, to Robert L. Adams, Sr. and Josephine Adams, both deceased. She is survived by her husband, Harvey Richard Barfield, Sr., and her son, Harvey Richard Barfield, Jr. (Rick). Helen also leaves behind two sisters, Linda Perkins (Jerry, deceased) and Robin Daniels (Daryl). Her brother, Robert L. Adams (Bobby), preceded her in death dying in 1969 at the age of 29. Helen also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Helen was the firstborn of Robert and Jo, born during the hardscrabble time of the Great Depression. A pretty girl with blue eyes and golden curls, she loved the outdoors, and was fiercely protective of her little brother. She and her middle sister, Linda, were the best of friends and had many hilarious adventures together. Her baby sister, Robin, was her "doodlebug". Helen was a Daddy's girl and loved following in his footsteps learning many skills from him - like how to syphon gas with a short length of hosepipe. After her father died, Helen welcomed her mother into her home. Helen and Jo enjoyed searching for deserted homeplaces to photograph so Helen could paint and sculpt them later. They would also dig up old lily and daffodil bulbs for transplanting later. She grew to be a beautiful woman who fell in love with Harvey, a young man playing on her Daddy's baseball team. They married in 1951. Harvey and Helen celebrated their seventy-first wedding anniversary this past year. Helen led a full life. She was a woman of many natural talents. She was an artist who painted and sculpted. She particularly enjoyed rendering scenes from the countryside of Georgia - old shotgun houses lacking paint, but surrounded by colorful azaleas and lilies. Helen had a lovely soprano voice and sang on stage in her younger days and in church throughout her life. Helen was a natural athlete, playing softball for decades; plus, she was limber and deft in gymnastics. Harvey and Helen have one son, Ricky, and they loved to traveling together. They traveled throughout the US, took dozens of cruises in the Caribbean, and enjoyed visiting Europe. Helen and Harvey also welcomed a young lady, Sue Hinson, into their family and loved her like a daughter. Helen adored her numerous nieces and nephews, and was adamant in her belief that they were the cutest, the smartest, and could do no wrong. In her later years, Helen had health challenges including heart disease, severe arthritis, and cancer. She was devout in her strong Christian beliefs and her family is comforted by the fact that she is no longer suffering and is reunited with her parents, brother, and brother-in-law who passed before her.
