Hillyer Malcolm Land
MACON - Hillyer Malcolm "Mr. Mac" Land of Macon, Georgia, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. He was 101 years old.
Services will be held Saturday May 24, 2025 at 2:00PM at Stone Creek Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Dr. Mark Grinsted, Dr. Donnie Sutton, and Dr. Richard McNair will officiate.
Mr. Land was the fifth of eight children born to Grover Cleveland Land and Bonnie Davis Land. He was born in their Twiggs County home on May 16, 1924.
He is predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn Thompson Land; and his sons, Alan Land and Steve Land, daughter-in law Charlotte Land; brothers, Davis Land, Ralph Land, Victor Land, Roland (Edna) Land, Hudson (Jo) Land and sister, Bonnie (Sam) Penn; and granddaughter, Kristy Doles.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Land; his brother, Buford Land; daughter-in-law Annette Land; grandchildren Tracy (Wesley) Haynes, Alana (Michael) Mullins, Becky Oman, Katey (Kessler) Ray, Keeley (Richard) Thompson, Jim (Kristin) Simmons and LeAnn (Brandon) Jones; great- grandchildren Annsley (Will) Fox, Gracy Haynes, Caleb Mullins, Connor (Caleigh) Doles, Garrett Doles, Reilly Doles, Griffin Parker, Korbin Ray, Kohen Ray, Ethan Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Riley Slayton, Kallie Slayton, Hayden Jones, Reese Jones and Ashton Jones; great-great granchild, Amelia Fox; grandson-in-law Mike Doles.
Survivors also include sisters-in-law, Marilyn Land, Blanche Land, Betty Land, and Carolyn (Frankie) Allen; brothers-in law Johnny (Tina) Thompson, and Larry Joe Thompson. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Land served as a medic in the U.S. Army, 3rd Armored Division, 45th Armored Medical Battalion during World War II. He was wounded on August 8, 1944 in Mortain, France, and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
After his military service, Mr. Land worked as a Budget Supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service where he joked, after all those years, he never handled a piece of mail. After retiring from the Postal Service, he worked part-time at The Medical Center as a greeter and valet.
Mr. Land enjoyed traveling with Evelyn and his whole extended family. He and Evelyn hosted many family get-togethers where there were many good meals and laughs shared.
Mr. Land never met a stranger. He enjoyed sharing a funny, clean joke. For example, "Why did the turtle cross the road?"..."to get to the Shell station". He was known for giving out Buffalo nickels. Mr. Land liked going to estate sales and yard sales and loved a good bargain. He especially liked collecting old clocks.
Mr. Land was a faithful church member of Stone Creek Baptist Church in Dry Branch, GA where he served many roles such as deacon, chairman of the deacons, Sunday School director and member of the choir. Mr. Land was baptized in 1935 and attended church "every time the doors were open" until the last couple of years. Mr. Land's actions, generosity and compassion demonstrated his Christian faith every day.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Friday in the funeral home.
